CIA documents and urban violence dominate Twitter

Bolsonaro leads visibility ranking again, yet negative sentiment against him also surges

For the first time in ten weeks, research on the election ecosystem on Twitter showed supporters of pre-candidates from far-right and left engaging in fierce debate. Weekly analysis conducted by AJA Solutions indicates that in the middle of these arguments were three main topics: a memorandum from the CIA about the role General Ernesto Geisel had in the execution of opponents during the dictatorship and two cases of violence; one in Rio, and one in Sao Paulo.

Heated debates about those three topics had a strong influence on the visibility dynamics of the pre-candidates at the top four positions in the relevance and visibility ranking this week. Very much identified with those three themes,  far-right pre-candidate Jair Bolsonaro started the discussion and went from 2nd to 1st in the visibility ranking amid strong support from his followers and, for the first time, highly criticised from followers of the candidates on the left.

Leftist Guilherme Boulos (PSOL, Socialism and Liberty Party) went up from 4th to 2nd position and Manuela D’Ávila (Brazil’s Communist Party) fell from 1st to 4th in the visibility ranking. Former president Lula, who was 5th last week, went up to 3rd, as his relevance was strengthened by followers that engaged on the debate and emphasized their support to him by backing #lulalivre (#freelula) – the hashtag with the highest visibility this week.
The first controversy was created by Bolsonaro when he answered a question from a journalist about a CIA document, according to which General Geisel, Brazil’s president between 1974-1979, approved the execution of the regime opponents during the military dictatorship. He stated: “Who hasn’t regretted never spanking his son?” (end of this week’s report preview)
